Houston’s budget woes may mean furloughs, layoffs (Houston Chronicle)

Mayor Annise Parker raised the possibility of furloughs and layoffs for city employees for the first time Wednesday, saying the city's dire budget outlook will require City Council to consider all available options for closing roughly $110 million in budget gaps during the next two years.

Quiet shuffling of city jobs meant to avoid layoffs (The Bakersfield Californian)

An undisclosed number of city employees have been encouraged to apply for job transfers in order to avoid possible layoffs. Bakersfield officials, faced with an estimated $8.7 million budget gap when the new fiscal year starts in July, say they're trying to hold on to as many staffers as possible through the shuffling.

By JOEL DiTATA The Leader-Herald NORTHVILLE - Nearly 100 Northville area residents, teachers and students showed up at a school board meeting Tuesday to express their concerns about 11 potential teacher layoffs and the way the teachers were notified. Some residents were concerned the notification letters were handed out only three days after voters approved a $3.9 million capital project.
